Sono Bello - malpractice, Review 5. Please read this before going to Sono Bella. I am 4. 1 year old male. I do not drink, smoke or do drugs. I had gained some weight. In 2. 01. 2 I went to Sono Bella to get a kick start to the body I had several years ago. She told me that if I could pinch it, they could suck it out. I wanted to get rid of the fat on my chest. She also talked me into getting my upper and lower abs also. I had a low BMI I met with Dr Pittman- Waller. She reassured me that she would get rid of my boobies, fat on my lower and upper abs. The nurses and Dr Pittman were great. After the procedure Dr. Pittman called to see how I was. My swelling was not even and it looked like I had more fat on my left side of my abs, right side of my chest was large and the shelf below my belly button was still there. I did look a little flatter. I was confused because it seem like I still had considerable fat on my chest and abs left. No one said it looked right. Dr Pittman said it looked great. My right side of my chest was larger and Knots were forming. I showed her a big fat lump on my left ab area . Right side of rounded left side fatty squared. And my shelf on my lower abs was still there. She said it was all swelling and it would go away. She told me I needed to rub those areas and they would go away. Everyone says it looks awful. I wore my support garments 2. Peers at work would stop me to see what was wrong with my chest. I had formed long horizontal dense tissue in my right side of my chest. I met with my regular doctor, Dr Geyer. He also said that it was an awful job and sent me to ARA for a sonogram and Xrays. It showed horizontal lines of dense tissue. The affects of surgery. I went back to Pitman Because I trusted her and asked what I should do. I asked her if I should go to another surgeon? She said she would take care of it. It dimples when I lift my arm. I have scar tissue now. At my 6th months I look nothing like the pics on their site and no one beside Sono Bella says it looks good. I made an appointment with Dr, Pittman she said she would meet with me. When I got there they told me she wouldn't meet with me. I could hear her in the next room. I met with a Dr Lauren Crawford. She was rude and short with me from the start. I showed her the clump of fat on my left ab, my shelf below my belly button, one flabby breast and the other one with a larger areola and lower. She said that they only can take 7. I asked why they don't have that on the web. She could answer that. I asked why then did Bailey say that if I could pinch it ya'll could suck it out and why did Dr Pittman agree? She could not answer that. She told me I don't know what a flat stomach or a flat chest looks like and then I showed her pictures of me. I even offered to walk over to Central Market with her and have people Say if you did a get good job or not. While a nurse was in the room she told me I come in all the time and sexually harass the nurses with my derogatory remarks and that she had gotten many complaints about me. If she actually spoke to Dr Pittman or Bailey or the other nurses, she would know this) I told her this has ended and that I was going to get a second opinion From a Dr. The nurse asked me if I wanted to schedule another appointment. I met with Dr Cameron and he said it was a bad procedure. It would cost me over $6. Sono bella has messed up. He does not recommend going in my right side of my chest for a 3rd time. I am permanently damaged. I will not be able to take my shirt off again. So If you would like to meet in a public place, I will give you a disc of all the pictures that sono bella took of me( a very nice nurse gave them to me). You will see that I have done my part to lose weight. The pics will show my sides and back are smaller. You will also get a copy my second opinion dated this May 2. Doctor Cameron and copies of my xrays with all my paper work. And I will show you in person what they have done. Final Rule Executive Order 1. This is The Indie Story Week # 03 They start an business named . Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) of 5. Central Park West, comes to the Ghostbusters and asks for their help after she experiences some horror in the kitchen of her own home. The Ghostbusters do a few tests to determine that she isn't crazy as she recounts a paranormal experience in her kitchen centering around the name . Peter seizes the opportunity to get romantically closer to Dana, and goes with her to the apartment. Using the Ghost Sniffer he checks out the place, finds nothing in the main room, and bedroom. Dana then directs him toward the kitchen where he finds eggs that cooked themselves on the counter, but gets no readings on the Ghost Sniffer despite using it correctly. Janine gets a call with a serious client, and she rings the alarm bell. The Ghostbusters run and get dressed, then leave in the Ecto- 1. They show up at the Sedgewick Hotel and the Hotel manager tells them that they are having problems with a resident ghost. Following a successful test of the equipment, they split up to search the hotel for the ghost. Peter finds the ghost which then slimes him. Egon calls Ray to tell him that the ghost is now in a ballroom. They enter the ballroom and as they attempt to capture it, they destroy the room and make a lot of noise. They ultimately manage to capture the ghost, and they find themselves an overnight success across both New York City and the nation. As the amount of calls grows, the team is required to hire a fourth member, Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson). An unwanted side effect of their new found popularity produces Walter Peck (William Atherton) from the Environmental Protection Agency. He comes to the firehouse trying to inspect the Storage facility which Peter refuses to let him do. After she hangs up,she gets grabbed by claws that burst out of her chair. She is taken in to the kitchen where she becomes possessed by Zuul. Meanwhile, Louis Tully (Rick Moranis), another resident of the apartments, is hosting a party for the fourth anniversary of him becoming an accountant, when a dog (also described as a bear and a cougar - but really a Terror Dog) attacks, and chases him out of the building and to a restaurant where it possesses him. He quickly realizes that she has been possessed by Zuul, the Gatekeeper of Gozer. Changed radically by her possession, Dana aggressively tries to seduce him but ends up growling fiercely and levitating above her bed in frustration after he repeatedly rejects her advances. He harasses locals until finding a carriage horse and confusing it with the Gatekeeper. When the coachman questions him, Louis responds by angrily flaring his eyes red and growling at the man. Later, the cops bring Louis to the Firehouse and ask Egon if he'd take him, as he is exhibiting strange behavior. Egon recognizes that Louis is possessed. Peter later calls Egon to tell him about Dana being possessed by Zuul, aka the . The explosion of supernatural energy causes Zuul to awake in her bed and allows Vinz Clortho to escape and make his way back to 5. Central Park West where they unite inside Dana's apartment with a passionate kiss. Peck orders the Ghostbusters arrested while the ghosts create panic across the city. While waiting in jail, the team recognizes that Dana's apartment building was a huge super- conductive antenna, designed and built expressly for the purpose of pulling in and concentrating spiritual turbulence. The mayor (David Margulies) orders the release of the Ghostbusters from jail. He has a conversation with the Ghostbusters about the events while Peck tries to counter- attack their story. In the end of the discussion, Peter wins over the mayor's judgment allowing them to get to work to prevent the potential catastrophe overriding Peck's demands. They are too late to prevent the possessed Dana and Louis from completing the ritual for the coming of Gozer. Today we are the market leader and one of the largest independent transporters and. When the Ghostbusters reach the hidden part of the building, the possessed Dana and Louis open a dimensional gate at the top of the building and are transformed into the Terror Dog forms of their possessors. They then take their positions beside Gozer's Temple as the Ghostbusters stare in shock. When Gozer (Slavitza Jovan) emerges in a female humanoid form, the team tries to shoot her with their packs, but fail to harm her. Gozer disappears and tells them to select the next form it will take, and though the team tries to empty their minds, Ray is unable to. Ray thinks about the most innocent thing he could imagine: the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. The team finds that a giant version of the marshmallow mascot has begun to lay waste to the city as it makes its way to the apartments and starts climbing the building. Egon realizes that the only way to end the destruction is to reverse the particle flow through the gate by crossing the streams, resulting in . The plan is risky at best, but there is definitely a very slim chance of their survival. As the giant creature reaches the top of the building, the team executes Egon's plan, causing the gate to seal itself, creating an explosion and burning the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man away into large amounts of liquid marshmallow fluff. The Ghostbusters find that they have all survived, and that Dana and Louis have returned to their normal, unpossessed, human forms. The team is cheered on by the vast population of New York City as they leave the building and drive away. The original story as written by Aykroyd . In that version a group of Ghostbusters would travel through time, space and other dimensions taking on huge ghosts. On March 5, 1. 98. Venkman's lines, Aykroyd heard Belushi had passed away. Murray responded favorably to the script's concept so Aykroyd took it to Ivan Reitman. Still, Reitman did like the comic attitude contrasted with a serious script. The finished script was around 1. He submitted the final script to Reitman along with concept drawings by artist friend John Daveikis and a videotape of himself wearing a jumpsuit based uniform and makeshift nutrona wands and a Proton Pack fashioned from styrofoam and old radio parts. At the time, several of Reitman's projects were stalled in various stages of development. Eager to get something into production, Reitman took another look. Reitman got a laugh out of the concept, equipment, car and logo but had reservations about the fantasy elements. He had a lunch meeting with Aykroyd at Art's Delicatessen in May 1. At the time, Reitman and Ramis had offices there. Ramis happened to be reading one of Aykroyd's other scripts, one about the Canadian Mounted Police. Aykroyd told him to put it aside and take a look at his Ghostbusters script. After about 2. 0 minutes, Ramis was in. Price liked it and asked about the budget. Without a final script and knowledge of such a movie, Reitman pulled a number out thin air since his last movie was $1. Price advised him to keep the budget in the mid- $2. Reitman 1. 3 months to make a summer tentpole movie for 1. The main thrust of the draft was to come up with a new story that made sense to Aykroyd, Ramis and Reitman. Aldredge, and editor Sheldon Kahn. With input from Edlund and De. Cuir, the budget was adjusted from $2. They settled on how the main characters would start out and where they would end up but the fine details still needed to be worked out. In terms of pacing, the movie didn't taking off until the hotel around page 4. They investigated a coverted farmhouse where a family was being bothered with incessant knocking. After watching a diet cola commercal, the alien and her compatriot transforms into a beautiful female human and a heavy set male human. Peter and Zuul go to a restaurant. Zuul sees woman taking their wraps off and attempts to take her blouse off. After leaving a restaurant, Zuul takes pity on a carriage horse and kisses it with genuine emotion, leaving the driver concerned. Peter takes Zuul to the Times Square Motor Hotel. The next morning, he wakes up to find Zuul has taken on a warthog form. When the Containment Unit releases the ghosts, they descend upon a subway station and hover over the tracks then hitch a ride on the express train to uptown. Egon concluded a small community in northern New Jersey was the likely epicenter of major psychic activity. The reason was its proximity to three nuclear power plants and chemical waste storage areas. Aykroyd was living there at the time and work took place in his basement with an old Royal electric typewriter. Egon demonstrated his prototype equipment but after it was plugged into an AC outlet, the Firehouse and Manhattan suffers a black out. Reitman also felt the movie could use another good guy coming in and joining the Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters became a highly successful multinational corporation named Ghostbusters International. Peter and Dana moved in together. Egon and Janine got married. Ray returned to Fort Detmerring for another visit from its resident female ghost. The July rewrite was constantly rewritten, re- edited and re- commented on. Aykroyd, Ramis, and Reitman left on July 1. As rewrites continued, Reitman started auditions. The artists were supervised by Michael Gross. Hundreds of concepts were conceived. Reitman did a simple mix- and- match to come up with the best assortment of designs. The History of Hypnosis. The history of hypnosis is full of contradictions. On the one hand, a history of hypnosis is a bit like a history of breathing. Like breathing, hypnosis is an inherent and universal trait, shared and experienced by all human beings since the dawn of time. On the other hand, it’s only in the last few decades that we’ve come to realise that! Hypnosis itself hasn’t changed for millennia, but our understanding of it and our ability to control it has changed quite profoundly. The history of hypnosis, then, is really the history of this change in perception. In the 2. 1st century, there are still those who see hypnosis as some form of occult power. Those who believe that hypnosis can be used to perform miracles or control minds are, of course, simply sharing the consensus view that prevailed for centuries. Recorded history is full of tantalising glimpses of rituals and practices that look very much like hypnosis from a modern perspective, from the “healing passes” of the Hindu Vedas to magical texts from ancient Egypt. These practices tend to be for magical or religious purposes, such as divination or communicating with gods and spirits. It’s important to remember, however, that what we see as occultism was the scientific establishment of its day, with exactly the same purpose as modern science – curing human ills and increasing knowledge. From a Western point of view, the decisive moment in the history of hypnosis occurred in the 1. Century (coinciding with the Enlightenment and the Age of Reason). The work of Franz Mesmer, amongst others, can be seen as both the last flourish of “occult” hypnosis and the first flourish of the “scientific” viewpoint. Mesmer was the first to propose a rational basis for the effects of hypnosis. Although we now know that his notion of “animal magnetism”, transferred from healer to patient through a mysterious etheric fluid, is hopelessly wrong, it was firmly based on scientific ideas current at the time, in particular Isaac Newton’s theories of gravitation. Mesmer was also the first to develop a consistent method for hypnosis, which was passed on to and developed by his followers. It was still a very ritualistic practice. Mesmer himself, for instance, liked to perform mass inductions by having his patients linked together by a rope, along which his “animal magnetism” could pass. He was also fond of dressing up in a cloak and playing ethereal music on the glass harmonica whilst this was happening. The popular image of the hypnotist as a charismatic and mystical figure can be firmly dated to this time. Inevitably, these magical trappings led to Mesmer’s downfall, and for a long time, hypnotism was a dangerous interest to have for anybody looking for a mainstream career. Nevertheless, the stubborn fact remained that hypnosis worked, and the 1. Century is characterised by individuals seeking to understand and apply its effects. Surgeons and physicians like John Elliotson and James Esdaille pioneered its use in the medical field, risking their reputation to do so, whilst researchers like James Braid began to peel away the obscuring layers of mesmerism, revealing the physical and biological truths at the heart of the phenomenon. Thanks to their persistence and efforts, by the end of the century hypnosis was accepted as a valid clinical technique, studied and applied in the great universities and hospitals of the day. This trend continued into the 2. Century, although in some ways, hypnosis became imprisoned by its own respectability, as it became mired in endless academic debate about “state” or “non- state”. This conundrum – does hypnosis have a real, physical basis, or not? Important shifts were happening elsewhere, however. First of all, the centre of hypnotic gravity moved from Europe to America, where all the most significant breakthroughs of the 2. Secondly, hypnosis became a popular phenomenon, something that was increasingly available to the layman, outside of the laboratory or clinic. At the same time, the style of hypnosis changed, from a direct instruction issued by an authoritarian figure (a legacy of the charismatic mesmerist) to a more indirect and permissive style of trance induction, based on subtly persuasive language patterns. This was largely due to the work of therapists such as Milton H. Erickson. More importantly, perhaps, hypnosis became increasingly practical, and regarded as a useful tool for easing psychological distress and bringing about profound change in a variety of situations. This theme has continued up to the present day. Advances in neurological science and brain imaging, together with the work of British psychologists Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell who linked hypnosis to the Rapid Eye Movement (REM), have also helped to resolve the “state/non- state” debate, bringing hypnosis and hypnotic trance firmly into the realm of everyday experience. At the same time, the nature of “ordinary” consciousness is better understood as a series of trance states that we go into and out of all the time. The history of hypnosis, then, is like the search for something that was in plain view all along, and we can now see it for what it is – a universal phenomenon that’s an inextricable part of being human. The future of hypnosis will be to fully realise the incredible potential of our natural hypnotic abilities. Music, TV & radio, books, film, art, dance & photography. We've noticed you're adblocking. The Problem with the Paleo Diet Argument. Our epidemics of dietary disease have prompted a great deal of research into what humans are meant to eat for optimal health. Losing weight with appetite suppressing drugs, herbs and macronutrients. Are you trying to lose weight? If so, let me ask you a question: What would make your weight loss goals easier to achieve? Aside from having those pounds magically melt off, appetite control would probably help you the most, right? Unfortunately for most people, appetite control is easier said than done. We'd all like to look at a chocolate bar, a piece of cake or ice cream and experience no desire for it whatsoever, but many of us have psychological dependencies on these so- called . But in the long term, they've all failed. Now is the time to really take control of your diet and body by finally controlling your appetite the right way. Similarly, before you learn how to really control your appetite and weight, you need to learn what doesn't work so that you can avoid it. If you wanted to, you could decide to become a methamphetamine addict and yes, you would lose weight. But you would also lose many other things, like your teeth, your money and your dignity. But still, weight loss would definitely occur. After the FDA banned amphetamines as appetite suppressants, diet pill manufacturers started producing pills containing caffeine, ephedrine and phenyl- propanolamine in one huge triple dose. When combined together, these three substances . In other words, the manufacturers found a way to give consumers amphetamine- like diet pills while circumventing the FDA's prohibition. In 1. 98. 2, the FDA realized what was happening and banned the triple combination of these substances as well. In 1. 99. 7, the Mayo Clinic reported that Fen Phen caused heart valve disease in 2. The FDA has been steadfast in its ban of Ephedra in spite of a federal judge's decision to strike down the ban. You can read about the FDA's real war against Ephedra in both a brief article by the Health Ranger and the Health Ranger's discussion of the FDA's policies on Ephedra versus Sudafed. As yet, there are no studies to confirm that these herbs will work well together. The theory is that people who can't taste their food will be less inclined to overindulge. Studies confirm this effect, to a degree. Even so, this approach remains a relatively unpopular one for the obvious reason that few people want to forgo for long the sensual pleasures of eating. The most common issue that comes from chronic under- eating is hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Hypoglycemia is defined as blood sugar below 7. L, though some people experience symptoms at higher blood sugar levels. Common symptoms include hunger, shakiness, anxiety, dizziness, sweating, weakness, confusion, and changes in mood. Under- eating can easily cause hypoglycemia, especially when combined with exercise. This urban slang refers to the state of anger and irritability resulting from being hungry. Since the brain requires blood sugar to function optimally, when it starts to drop, one of the first cognitive processes that suffers is self- control. This is especially common in peri- menopausal women who seem to be especially prone to poor sleep despite generally good sleep hygiene and a health conscious lifestyle. Oddly enough, one of the first symptoms that changes when I get my clients eating a more calorically appropriate diet is a significant improvement in sleep duration and quality. One reason for this likely comes from the improved blood sugar control that arises from an appropriate calorie and carbohydrate intake. As your blood sugar drops overnight, your liver must release its stored glucose (in the form of glycogen) to keep your blood sugar steady. If these stress hormones elevate high enough, they can actually wake you up in the middle of the night. Making sure you. The most obvious is that feces is made up of waste matter from the digestion of food, so if you. The less obvious, but more likely reason that under- eating can lead to constipation is due to the effects of undernutrition on thyroid hormone. As I discussed previously, under- eating causes a down regulation of T3, the active thyroid hormone. This can lead to a condition called euthyroid sick syndrome, where T3 is low, reverse T3 is high, and TSH and T4 are often normal. This means your body develops hypothyroidism symptoms without necessarily showing any change in the typical thyroid function markers that most doctors check. Constipation is a very common symptom of hypothyroidism, as active thyroid hormone helps stimulate peristalsis in the gut, keeping digestion humming along smoothly. When T3 drops, gut motility slows, and this can lead to chronic constipation. Whether or not this extends our lifespan, who wants to constantly feel frigid on a daily basis? Low insulin can also lead to low body temperature, so some people on a very low carbohydrate diet will experience this symptom as well. It is exacerbated by the hormonal changes that develop from chronic under- eating, including a drop in sex hormones like progesterone, testosterone, and estrogen. Even in our test group of 3. We can cut out the middle- moo, though, and get calcium from the plants directly. Where do you get your protein? Protein contains essential amino acids, meaning our bodies can. But other animals don. All essential amino acids originate from plants (and microbes), and all plant proteins have all essential amino acids. So, the only protein source that you couldn. Scientists found that infant rats don. Rat milk has ten times more protein than human milk, because rats grow about ten times faster than human infants. It is true that some plant proteins are relatively low in certain essential amino acids. So, about 4. 0 years ago, the myth of . The concept was that we needed to eat . This fallacy was refuted decades ago. The myth that plant proteins are incomplete, that plant proteins aren. John Mc. Dougall called out the American Heart Association for a 2. Thankfully though, they. Some 9. 0 grams of protein are dumped into the digestive tract every day from our own body to get broken back down and reassembled, and so our body can mix and match amino acids to whatever proportions we need, whatever we eat, making it practically impossible to even design a diet of whole plant foods that. Thus, plant- based consumers do not need to be at all concerned about amino acid imbalances from the plant proteins that make up our usual diets. To see any graphs, charts, graphics, images, and quotes to which Dr. This is just an approximation. Why Weight Watchers is actually a low carb diet - Invariably I get asked the question, “If carbohydrates are so bad, why did . Obviously, this is an important question and a pretty complex one. There are several layers to this and, frankly, there are some things we can’t fully explain – I’ll always acknowledge this. That said, many of the successes (at least weight- wise, though hopefully by now you realize there is much more to health than just body composition) of popular diets can be explained by a few simple observations. Above is a list of this year’s most “popular” diets, according to Consumer Reports. Popularity, of course, was determined by a number of factors, including compliance with current government recommendations (sorry Atkins), number of people who have tried the diet, and reported success on the diets. So it’s actually quite misleading when the report says it’s reporting on the “most effective diets.”Keep in mind the average American (i. NHANES to USDA will give slightly different numbers for this, but this range is about correct), of which about 4. You can argue that those who are overweight probably consume an even greater amount of carbohydrates. But for the purpose of simplicity, let’s assume even the folks who go on these diets are consuming the national average of approximately 4. Take a look again at the figure below, which shows you how many calories folks are consuming on each diet and, more importantly, where those calories come from. In other words, these numbers could actually be wrong, but it’s what we’ve got for now. Even the Ornish diet, which is the most restrictive diet with respect to fat and most liberal with respect to carbohydrates, still reduces carbohydrate intake by about 4. The reason, I believe, most of these diets have some efficacy – at least in the short- term – is that they all reduce sugar and highly refined carbohydrate intake, either explicitly or implicitly. No one on the Ornish Diet or Jenny Craig Diet is eating candy bars and potato chips, at least not if they are adhering to it. Hence, these diet plans do “clean up” the eating habits of most folks. Someone made a great point in response to my post on why fruits and vegetables are not actually necessary for good health. The point was, essentially, that telling people to eat 5- 6 servings per day of fruits and vegetables can hopefully drive a beneficial substitution effect. If you tell someone who eats Twinkies, potato chips, and candy bars all day to eat more fruit (and they do), you’ve almost guaranteed an improvement in their health if they eat bananas and apples instead of the aforementioned junk food. That doesn’t mean bananas and apples are “good for you” – it just means they are less “bad for you.” Here’s the kicker, though. We’re led to believe that the reason such folks get leaner and more healthy is because they are eating more fruits or more vegetables or more grains or more . I have no intention of engaging in a battle with proponents of plant- based eating or no- saturated- fat diets. I’m reasonably confident that the proponents of these diets are good people who really want to help others and have nothing but the best intentions. But that doesn’t mean we can or should overlook the errors being made in drawing their conclusions. Many people do very well on plant- based (e. But why are they doing well? That is the single most important question we should be asking ourselves. Why did the people in the China Study who ate more plants do better than those who ate more animals (assuming they did)? Parenthetically, if you actually want the answer to this question, beyond my peripheral address, below, please read Denise Minger’s categorically brilliant analysis of the study. I know a lot of people who eat this way and, I’ve got to say, these folks do not eat a lot of sugar or a lot of highly refined carbohydrates. In fact, many are so conscientious of their health that they actually have far better carb- habits than most (e. While I do plan to write an entire post on this topic of what one can and cannot conclude from an experiment, I do want to at least make the point here: The biggest single problem with nutrition “science” is that cause and effect are rarely linked correctly. Stated another way, it’s one thing to observe an outcome, but it’s quite another to conclude the actual cause of that outcome. Let me digress for a moment to provide an important example of this phenomenon. One of the most prominent figures in the diet/nutrition space is Dr. Ornish personally, and I can only assume that he is a profoundly caring physician who has dedicated his life to helping people live better lives. He is nationally, and internationally, regarded for his efforts. One of the reasons for his prominence, I believe, is the work he did in the early 1. Ornish was the principle investigator on a trial published in the journal The Lancet in 1. An abstract of the paper can be found here. But as always, I STRONGLY encourage folks with access (or folks who are willing to purchase it) to read the paper in its entirety. For people who don’t want to read the study completely, or who may not have much experience reading clinical papers, I want to devote some time to digging into this paper. Well, for starters, reading abstracts, hearing CNN headlines, or reading about studies in the NY Times doesn’t actually give you enough information to really understand if the results are applicable to you. Beyond this reason, and let me be uncharacteristically blunt, just because a study is published in a medical journal it does not imply that is worth the paper it is printed on. My mentor at the NIH, Dr. Steve Rosenberg, once told me that a great number of published studies are never again cited (I forget the exact number, but it was staggering, over 5. Translation: whatever they published was of such little value that no one ever made reference to it again. I am, to be clear, not implying this is the case for this trial, but I want you to understand why it’s important to read papers fully. This trial, The Lifestyle Heart Trial, prospectively randomized a group of not- so- healthy patients into two treatment groups: the control group and the experimental group (or what we’d call the “treatment” or “intervention” group). The experimental group (2. Change their diet to a low- fat vegetarian diet (1. Smoking cessation. Exercise regimen (minimum of 3 hours per week, at minimum of 3. Stress management (e. Join social supportgroups for help with adherence (twice weekly)The control group (1. One aspect of this trial that made the results particularly interesting was the use of angiography to actually measure and document the coronary artery lesions (i. The study was not powered to measure “hard” outcomes (e. In other words, there were not enough subjects in the study to determine a difference in these “hard” outcomes, so we can’t make a conclusion about such events, only the changes in “soft” outcomes. I’m not discounting soft outcomes, only pointing out the distinction for folks not familiar with them. So what happened after a year of intervention versus no intervention? First off, and perhaps most importantly from the standpoint of drawing conclusions, compliance was reported to be excellent and the differences between the groups were statistically significant on every metric, except total average caloric intake. In other words, for every intended difference between the groups a difference existed, except that on average they ate the same number of calories (though obviously from very different sources), which was not intended to be different as both groups were permitted to eat ad libitum – meaning as much as they wanted. Who was “healthier” at the end of a year? The table below shows the changes in both groups. If you want a quick primer on p- values, this is as good a time as any to get one. These tables (i. e., results tables) are a bit cumbersome if you’re not used to looking at them, so let me walk you through one row in detail. Let’s look at HDL cholesterol concentration. In the experimental group, HDL- C fell slightly from 1. M (3. 9 +/- 1. 0 mg/dl for Yankees like me) to 0. M (3. 8 +/- 1. 5 mg/dl), while it slightly fell from 1. M (5. 2 +/- 2. 0 mg/dl) to 1. M (5. 1 +/- 1. 5 mg/dl) for the control (i. It’s hard to tell if this change was statistically significant by inspection, so you glance at the p- value which tells you it was not. That is, how did the actual measured lesions in the subjects’ coronary arteries change? Can I conclude that a low- fat vegetarian diet is the “best” diet for reducing the risk of heart disease? Unfortunately, we do not know. SLIGHT DIGRESSION: Tragically, all of U. S. Maybe their conclusions are correct. The other group gets randomized to a cocktail of 1. I argue that each of these diets does some good, especially with respect to eliminating the worst offending agents along the insulin- fat- metabolic derangement axes. And, the majority of the benefit folks receive comes from the reduction of sugars and highly refined carbohydrates. But now I’m repeating myself, aren’t I? The 3. 7 Best- Ever Drinks for Weight Loss.
